Chimney Sweeping Questions frequently asked of us

How often should I have my chimney swept?
All flues need to be regularly swept to ensure optimum efficiency and safety. If a flue liner has been installed, regular sweeping will help to increase its lifespan.

The National Association of Chimney Sweeps recommended frequency is set out below:

Smokeless Fuels - Once a year
Bituminous Coal - Twice a year
Wood - Quarterly (when in use)
Gas - Once a year

What happens if I do not get my chimney swept?
Soot and tar deposits will build up representing an increased risk of fire and an inefficient chimney.

Blockages can also lead to an increased risk of carbon monoxide poisoning due to lack of adequate venting.

According to Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service "The latest statistics show that there are approximately 7,000 chimney fires a year in England, but most of these are preventable. "

How long does it take to sweep a chimney?
About an hour. It may take less and sometimes more if there is a problem in accessing the flue or a blockage.
I have just move into a new house. How do I know if my chimney is safe to use?
We recommend that you arrange to have the chimneys swept before using them. We will sweep, test and provide advice.
Do I need to do anything before the chimney sweep arrives?
We will bring sheets and all equipment necessary for sweeping the flue and ensure that no mess is made in your room. It would help if you could ensure the fireplace is free from ornaments and coal buckets etc to enable good working access. Please do not use the appliance for 6 hours before the visit. If you have a gas fire, it will need to be disconnected before sweeping the flue, please ensure that this is done. We can provide details of a GAS SAFE fitter should you require one.
What type of fuel can I use on my appliance?
For multi-fuel stoves, you can burn seasoned or kiln dried logs or smokeless coal. You can also burn briquettes. You should ensure that any wood you burn is of a moisture content less than 25%
My fire isn't working properly, can someone come out to look at it?
In our experience, 90% of problems are with the flue rather than the appliance. A chimney sweep will cure most problems and we will always check that the appliance is working correctly as well.
