Q and A on Stoves and wood fuels

Following a lot of missinformation about wood burning stoves we have updated our website to ensure that customers are fully aware of the situation. Wood burning stoves continue to provide a carbon neutral way of heating your home and new legislation means that strict new emmissions standards will ensure that stoves are even more efficient. The picture here reveals the real problem which is open fires and very old inefficient stoves. An new 'eco design stove' will produce 90% fewer particles than an open fire and 80% fewer particles than that of a ten year old stove. As long as you are using Kiln dry logs from a sustanable source a stove is a great way to heat your home. Our Q and A page will be published soon but if you have any queries or would like to talk to us about the new eco design stoves available through Home fires and fuels please call.

Moisture testing our Kiln Dry Logs

Make sure your logs are ready for burning

Kiln dry hardwood logs are the best logs for your stove as they produce less tar and have a much lower moisture content than seasoned or newly cut logs. At Homefires and fuels we spot test all of our deliveries to make sure our logs are exceptionally dry.

For burning we recommend logs are under 20% moisure and ours are usually well under this. To be sure of low moisture content, dry logs, we recommend that customers buy a moisture meter. Low moisture =dry logs = less tar and deposits in your chimnmey and liner and the environment  and a longer life for your appliance.

Kiln Dry or Seasoned Logs?

Should I use Kiln Dried logs or Seasoned logs in my stove?

If you have a modern stove with or without a liner fitted,

we would always recommend Kiln dry hardwood logs. You can buy logs that are advertised as 'Seasoned' but make sure that they have been properley seasoned for two seasoned and not just chopped down and left for a few months. Logs that are not properley seasoned can have moisture content of 35-  to even 50% which is bad for your appkliance, bad for your liner and the environment.

If in doubt, buy Kiln dried hardwood logs. These should have a moisture content of less than 20%

Our Kiln dry logs have are standard length and quality, easy to light and burn really well.

Studies have shown that buying Kiln Dry logs from a sustainable source is not only good for the environment and your appliance but pound for pound is usually no more expensive that buying cheaper logs with a higher moisture content. More water = less wood.

We deliver across Stockport, The heatons, South Manchester and East Cheshire.

Our customers love our Kiln Dry Logs

Stockport Customers love our Kiln Dry Logs

Stockport Kiln dry logs proving popular

Home fires and fuels have been supplying customers in the Stockport, South Manchester and East Cheshire areas for nearly eight years now. What is noticeable is that customers who buy from us once usually come back time and time again. As well as private houses w now regularly deliver to some of Stockports wonderful pubs, retail shops and Pizza makers.

We have put this down to a number of reasons:

     1) We only deliver logs that have been Kiln Dried to a maximum of 18% moisture (often much lower) so you can guarentee  consistent quality

     2) We ensure that our logs/coal/briquettes are delivered at regular intervals and to a convenient place (we always cover our fuel on delivery and when we leave it)

    3) We keep our prices competetive but will not compromise on quality and consistency.
